Sneijder on way to Manchester United

Manchester United closing in on Inter’s Wesley Sneijder – report

Dutch playmaker has caught the attention of Manchester United with his good performances for Inter and a summer transfer could be on the cards.

Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder could be on his way out of Italian powerhouse Inter at the end of the season as Champions League hopefuls Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing the playmaker, De Telegraaf reports.

The Premier League table toppers are in the market for a new playmaker to replace the ageing Paul Scholes and manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly considers the 27-year-old Sneijder to be the perfect addition to his midfield.

Sneijder is a product of the Ajax youth academy and also wore the jersey of Real Madrid before joining Inter in the summer of 2009. The midfielder guided Inter to Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia victory in his first season at Giuseppe Meazza and also reached the final of the 2010 World Cup with Oranje.

Inter have been struggling to find their best form this term though and Sneijder has been linked with a move away from the Italian titans more than once.

Manchester United reportedly contacted Sneijder’s agent about two weeks ago to discuss a possible transfer, and the English giants are willing to offer up to €30 million for the Dutch international.

Andres Iniesta could miss against Real Madrid

Andres Iniesta should find out on Wednesday if he is to be punished by UEFA for allegedly getting deliberately booked during his side’s recent Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Barcelona midfielder is in danger of missing next week’s Champions League first leg semi-final showdown against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu if the ban sticks.

Officials at the match alleged Iniesta provoked the card so he could serve the standard one-match ban in the second leg and would have a clean slate for the semi-finals

The Spain World Cup winner was cautioned for not retreating the required distance at a free-kick, meaning he missed the return game in Ukraine.

But Barca refute the claims and have decided to appeal UEFA’s proposed ban.

‘FC Barcelona believe that the arguments outlined in their appeal, based on the good faith of the player and the disproportionate nature of the proposed sanction will be sufficient to rebut these allegations,’ the club said on their official website.

‘The UEFA disciplinary committee will make a decision on the case on Wednesday.’

Barcelona face La Liga rivals Real Madrid in the last four of Europe’s premier club competition with the first leg away at the Bernabeu on April 27.

Carlo Ancelotti: Fernando Torres will score for Chelsea before the end of the season

Carlo Ancelotti has boldly declared Fernando Torres will score for Chelsea before the end of the season.

Torres has now gone 871 minutes without finding the net for club and country and bookmakers have begun taking bets on
whether he will break his duck before the campaign is over.

But manager Ancelotti has no doubt that the Spain striker will begin repaying his £50m transfer fee in Chelsea’s last six
games of the season.

‘He will score,’ said Ancelotti, who refused to confirm whether the 27-year-old would start Wednesday’s Barclays Premier
League match against Birmingham after being restricted to an eight-minute cameo at West Brom on Saturday.

‘He can score if he plays.

‘It’s very difficult to change the team that played so well against West Brom, not just for the result, not just for the
performance. They did very well against West Bromwich.’

Ancelotti revealed he and his coaching staff were not employing any special methods to get Torres scoring.

He said: ‘We are working with him like we are with the other strikers. He has exercises to score – shooting, crossing – but
nothing different from the others.

‘I think he wants to score and he’s not happy for this reason. I would like to see my players every time happy and with  confidence.

‘It’s not a good moment for Fernando, but I want to do my best to support him.’

Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott had early chances for the Gunners. Laurent Koscielny also hit the bar in the first 45 and Robin van Persie had a goal disallowed for offside. Luis Suarez shot wide at the start of the second half and just before the hour there was an extended stoppage after a nasty looking injury to Jamie Carragher. Robin van Persie was the next to lob over for Arsenal on 71 and with four minutes of the 90 left Pepe Reina saved well from RVP. Due to the stoppages there were 8 minutes of injury time and it looked like Arsenal would get their win when Robin van Persie scored a penalty on 96 after Shelvey had fouled Fabregas. But back came Liverpool and won their own penalty for an Eboue foul on Lucas which was converted by Dirk Kuyt.

One of the early highlights of the Clasico was Marcelo sweeping the linesman off his feet. Lionel Messi had the first big chance, chipping the ball into the hands of Casillas. The second half started with plenty of action, Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post from a free-kick and on their next attack Barcelona won a penalty for an Albiol foul on Villa with Lionel Messi converting – his first goal against a Jose Mourinho side and the Real defender sent off. Real Madrid drew level with 8 minutes to go, Cristiano Ronaldo converting a penalty for an Alves foul on Marcelo – CR7′s first ever goal against Barcelona.

The coffin for Spurs’ Champions League campaign was sealed shut five minutes after the restart when a speculative Cristiano Ronaldo shot on target horrifically slipped through Heurelho Gomes’s fingers and into the net.
